When I was born on the 26th of January, 1944, in Arequipa, Peru, the doctors were surprised to see living proof that the human being was not a descendant of the monkey. They concluded that it was the other way around… the monkey ascended from the human being! I felt so indignant about their conclusion that I promised myself that my life would be a never-ending struggle to prove them wrong!
At school I started sketching my classmates and teachers, and for my efforts got a beating from one professor for painting him as an orangutan. When I finished school I decided to study architecture, but failed in the attempt, because the only thing I managed to draw were sketches of stick figures.
Later, my parents sent me to Germany, where I studied for two years in the Mainz School of Art. The Germans tried to convince me that pigs were superior to monkeys, because, at least one could make hams and sausages from them. Finally, my caricatures were published by the Wiesbadener Tagblatt newspaper, where I was the staff cartoonist for two years.
I travelled to Berlin and started painting faces all the same, but I regretted it because I soon discovered that every person has a different face.
When I returned to my home town in Peru, I began drawing comic strips and caricatures for the El Pueblo and Correo newspapers and had my first exposition of caricatures.
In 1974 I was in Spain, travelling through Barcelona, Torremolinos, Ibiza and the Canary Islands, painting caricatures of the tourists. In Tenerife I won second prize in the “International Caricature Competition”, which was part of the Quincentennial Celebration of the Discovery of America.
I now live in Lanzarote, a paradise in the Canary Islands, where I amuse the tourists, trying to prove that the Monkey can paint caricatures!
In 2000 – 2001 I attended the annual worldwide Caricaturist Convention organized by the NCN in San Diego, California and Atlanta, Georgia. I was awarded the second and third prizes in the color caricature category.
In 2002 I was invited by the Al Bayan Press to participate in the Second Worldwide Caricaturist Forum, which was held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where I was awarded a Certificate of Merit.
